The most effective thing a mediator can do for the parties is to help them build a viable dialogue, through which they can understand together the reasons for their conflict and decide together how to get out of their problem.
Giving power to the parties, helping them to face each other directly, without intermediaries, is a cornerstone of the way I work: the problem belongs to the parties, the parties are the “experts” of their conflict, only they know what really matters in their lives. And the responsibility for deciding their own future is theirs too.
Mediation is a space and a time that must belong to the parties. I care a great deal that every aspect of the mediation process, every step, instead of being settled by the mediator’s instruction, is handled by looking for an agreement between the parties: the idea is that every agreement on the “how” makes the parties feel they are the protagonists of a process built and wanted by them, and this is an important step towards an agreement on the “what”.
